High unemployment rates.... Faltering home loans....Stockmarket tumbles...
Is this another sign of the end times? We're supposedly recovering, but will it last? Will things get better? If they do get better, how long will it last?
What are your predictions/thoughts for the economic future? Do you have any good articles to post regarding economic forecasts?
Have you made any changes in your way of life as a result of the recession? Are you preparing for financial doomsday... or are you prepared?

I keep hearing about a recovery but I don't believe it. Where have we recovered? I'm sure not seeing it in daily life. More and more people are losing their jobs, homes, etc. everyday. It's really sad. I hope things get better but I don't think the causes of the economic meltdown were ever addressed. We just threw money at it and were told to look the other way.

I don't think there is any recovery for my state (Oklahoma) in fact, we have been somewhat protected until recently and now the recession is starting to really affect us. Less taxes being collected, mean less monies to go to school systems and state agencies, so the cutbacks have started. Things like some schools going to 4 days a week instead of 5, this cuts back on gas for school buses, cafeteria and maintenance workers pay, utilities, their days are just a bit longer. State employees not getting per diem for meals when at training, not getting hotel rooms paid for when at away training, they pay for it themselves or they drive back and forth, health insurance co-pays gone up from $25 to $50 for each doctors visit, talk of mandatory unpaid furlough days. Layoffs for school employees and state employees. I know schools and state employees are hit hard as I have a kid and grandkids in the public school system and as far as the state employees, hubby and my oldest daughter are both state employees.
Even the state prisons are being hit hard, they are having to eliminate training programs for prisoners, as well as eliminate employee positions and paycuts.

I know things are really bad. Sorry to hear what's going on in Oklahoma. I thought it was doing alright, considering these economic times. I live in California and we're broke. It's unbelievable. California has one of the highest tax rates in the nation, if not the highest, and the politicians here still can't manage a budget. They'd rather spend, spend, spend and then ask the fed gov't for a bailout. Very responsible. Rack up the debt and then have everybody in the US pay for it. It makes me so angry!

Until recently, Oklahoma had been doing ok, but it was just a matter of time until we caught up with what was going on elsewhere in the country. I do kind of keep up with what's going on in CA, as hubby is from CA and still has most of his family there and I have a brother and three sisters that live in CA I know you guys have been having a rough time out there. Alot of my neices and nephews had gotten laid off from jobs out there. There are still plenty of jobs here in Oklahoma, but they are fast food, low paying jobs and that is about the only thing available for anyone looking. Just this last week one of the local hospitals laid off 60 people, one of the smaller school districts laid off people for next school year and had others go part time other school districts are trying to get people to retire if they are eligible so they don't have to refill their positions, in an effort to save money. Even though this doesn't sound like it affects huge amounts of people (things like this have been happening all over), it has a trickle down effect when people are not making as much money, they are not spending as much money and not as much sales taxes are coming into the state, so the state income is falling short.

Penham, Colorado is in the same position as Oklahoma. The east and west coasts are in worse shape. Our schools are doing the same thing 4 day weeks, salary freeze, laid off teachers, larger classroom size, pay for bus rides to school. This year is an assessment year for property and it is down so that means less money for the schools next year.
Believe Obama and his Administration....recession is over! NOT!

As each day goes by, here in Oklahoma, the economy gets worse. The State economy is getting worse, unpaid furloughs are beginning for state employees. They have already started in the Dept of Corrections. Starting July 1, they will start in the agency where my daughter works, DHS, she is a food stamp worker, they will be going to 4 day work weeks, with all emplyoyees taking 1 day a week of unpaid furlough. This will be a huge pay cut for her. So we are just waiting, hubby is also a state employee and rumors have been going around, also the leave request he filled out for taking a day off last week had a new option on it "furlough" so it's coming, his agency just hasn't made it public yet. If his agency does the same thing that will mean over a $500 pay cut for us a month. Not good.

Well oldest daughter had their agency meeting today and their mandatory furloughs start July 1 and are to last for at least 1 year, when at that time depending on the state budget, they could become permanent. While the furloughs are temporary for the first year it won't affect how they acrrue sick/vacation leave or their insurance. If at the end of the year, the reduction in hours is made permanent it will affect how they accrue leave and possibly their health insurance. DHS will be closed Friday, Saturday and Sunday. They will be offering some employees packages to quit, and were told if you are offered one to take it, as they will also be just letting some go with nothing later on. This is not to be confused with any early retirement packages being offered.

We live in a very small town, pop 1200. We only have one school, the elementary, junior high and high school are in seperate buildings but on the same campus. They are laying off 5 teachers for the fall. The elementary school PE teacher, who also coaches high school baseball, the Spanish teacher (we will no longer offer a foreign language), a special ed aid, the drama teacher who also puts together the yearbook and is a part time secretary in the high school office and an elementary school teacher.
Our school is not considering a 4 day week as of yet, as they say they make more money in federal aid offering the school breakfast/lunch program that extra day than would offset what they would save by not holding school for a day, since we only run 4 buses. For a bigger school district it makes sense, but the superintendant says for us, no.

Yep, Penham all school districts are doing this...scary but a sign of the times. I just love the Obama Administration saying this recession is over. Not for all the people who are still losing their jobs. Just wait until your area does their assessments of property and the taxes go down even worse they will have to let more people go.
Our schools are increasing class size, having teacher aids take on more teaching of small groups, and reduction in teachers. This recession will continue and both Repubs and Dems are at fault!

Did anyone see the 1000 point drop in the stock market today? I read that it was the panic was caused by someone of a typo. I guess they typed a T for trillion instead of a B for billion. I've heard analysts saying "this happens all of the time". I don't know if I buy this as I don't remember of hearing of 1000 point drops before. And can you imagine all the people who lost a lot of money because of a typo? Horrible!
