If you are new to getting ready for any disaster and need help, just ask. Many of us are old time preppers and we are happy to help you in any way to get prepped for any emergency.
The more people that are prepped for an emergency the better for everyone...one less family to have to help.

Agreed. It's good to be prepared for whatever comes our way. It could be an earthquake, hurricaine, deadly pandemic, ice storm, tornado, wild fire, mass societal panic attack, or an economic meltdown.
We should all be prepared and have plans in place for any and all potential disasters. Nothing is worse than being left with absolutely nothing when the world around you is falling apart. There is something you can do to plan and help yourself... a sort of insurance policy so to speak to protect yourself. We will ineviably all die some day; however, we should be prepared for rough times and make sure we can take care of ourselves without expecting others to take care of us. Save money. Save food. Save items of potential value. There are many things you can do to prep and many reasons - not all of them disasters. You might become unemployed or end up in the hospital with an unexpected medical problem which requires you to be out of work for awhile, etc. There's quite a number of reasons to prep. Like OriginalFluMom said, there are a lot of people on this site who are prepared for many situations. |

Guys, I want to buy a propane heater and found one I like on line at walmart called the big buddy propane heater. however, a couple comments said it will not work at high altitudes and I am around the 7000 mark. Does anyone know of high altitude propane heaters??

In addition to that question, I also wanted some suggestions on inexpensive water filtering devices. i have based all my preps on if I could stay at home....this year I am focusing on if I have to get in my camper and leave.

My DH bought the big buddy propane heater and loves it. I'm not sure how it works in higher elevations but I will ask him and let you know. I'll also see if he knows of propane heaters for higher elevations and water filtering devices.

So here's what my DH said. Some propane heaters have a shut off safety feature for lack of oxygen. So you need one that doesn't have this feature. You can get them at sportsmansguide.com or northerntool.com.
Regarding the water filtration systems, he likes Berkely. They can be found at berklywaterfilters.com and are about $250 but have rebates. Another thing you can do is buy water filters, he said about $125 worth, and use a pail to filter the water. Hopes this helps. |

thanks for the response. I just ordered a big buddy because the reviews were so good. however, I am going to try it, keep the box and all and then make sure the oxygen is ok here and if not, send it back. I like the safety feature so I hate to get one without that but its a two way street I guess. I will check out those berkly filters! thanks for the info!

Here is my take on propane heaters...what good are they if you run out of propane? I have my home heated with a wood stove insert. I will be able to find wood on my own.
As for a water filter...purchase a Berkey. I did. If you live in Colorado or any other state where they mine for silver or gold get a couple of arsnic filters that attach to the black Berkey filters. Arsnic is a problem in mining states and you never know where the water came from.
Here is my plan for drinking water. I have 5 gallon cube water holders and a large funnel that fits into the 5 gallon cube. I will put a coffee filter into funnel to put lake/river/stream water through. The coffee filter will get the "big stuff" and it is easy to exchange filters than un-clog the funnel. I purchased my funnel from a home wine making company. The funnel has a filter but a coffee filter makes the process easier. Then I will put my bleach solution into this five gallons of water. Let this water settle and pour off the "clear" water into the Berkey Filter you will have wonderful drinking water in a jiffy. Put the bleach in first because the Berkey will take the bleach flavor away.
People will say you can make your own Berkey but having a metal Berkey with back up parts and extra filters makes me more secure than a couple of plastic buckes with parts that are jury rigged. Save up the money and pay the 175.00 for the real thing. After I got my Berkey and extra parts and filters I could sleep because you can't live three minutes without air, three days without water and three weeks without food. My next project is to find out where there is well water if surface water is bad or not there...I can use well water because I have a Berkey that will filter out all the bad stuff.
Load your camper up with a few Down comforters, and wool blankets. Down keeps you really warm if you are "dry" or no rain or snow on you . Wool will keep you warm even if the blanket gets wet. Get a dog and stick it in bed with you under the comforters and blankets the dog body heat will keep you warm! Propane if things get really bad will only last so long and will be hard to find as time goes on.
Another good idea is to warm rocks in your camp fire and place the warm rocks in a canvas bag then put them in the bed with you. If you get the bed warm and get under the covers you will stay warm most of the night. You don't have to feed rocks like you have to feed a dog! LOL!
Hope some of these ideas help you. I look at the worst possible things that can happen so take my advice with a grain of salt.
Good luck with your preps!
